Memory Struggle Affirmation: Expressions of the African-American Artist

Visual Art

This traveling ArtReach exhibit features six original works from the permanent collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Memory Struggle Affirmation includes two-dimensional works, such as color lithographs and mixed media, by 20th Century African-American artists. The exhibit includes works by Benny Andrews, Marcus Akinlana, Garry R. Bibbs, John Biggers, James Palmore and Murphy Darden Sr. These artists approach such themes as cultural identity, social conflict and collective memory with deep insight and unique authority.

The exhibit is brought to schools and professionally installed by Kalamazoo Institute of Art staff. The exhibit must be located in a lockable room, such as a library. The exhibit will be on display at each school for two weeks.
